Digital Mammography

An important part of women's care is an annual mammogram.  The American Cancer Society recommends a baseline mammogram from the age of 35 to 40 then annual mammograms thereafter.  While mammograms can miss some cancers, they are still a very good way to find breast cancer.

Although advances in finding the cure to breast cancer are being made every day, early detection is still the key to beating this illness. Research shows that breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, and that one in eight women will be affected by it during their lifetime. A new advance in the technology of mammograms allows for even earlier detection of breast cancer. Digital mammography is very similar to traditional screen-film mammography in the sense that they both use compression and x-rays to create images of the breast. However, digital mammography uses specially designed digital detectors to create a high definition image that can be stored and sent just like a computer file.

Although digital mammography is similar to regular film-screen mammography, it has two important benefits. The first benefit is that the images created are high definition, and can be zoomed in on and adjusted so that the radiologist can see every aspect of the image. This allows the radiologist to see tiny details that might have been missed on a regular mammography, thus potentially allowing for even earlier detection. The other benefit is that digital mammography images are usually much more successful and accurate than their predecessors. This means that the need for retaking images due to overexposure or underexposure is greatly reduced.

Our digital mammography equipment is accredited by the American College of Radiology and meets or exceeds the requirements of the FDA.  In addition, all of our mammographers are Registered Radiologic Technologists specialized in mammography.

Enjoy the convenience of combining your mammogram with your annual exam (one co-pay) by scheduling both services for the same day.
